All these steps seem straight forward but as I am not as confident as I would like with computers I would like to stay away from the clean boots etc. So my final question is do I really need the InstallShield Update Manager? InstallShield is a proprietary software tool for creating installers or software packages. InstallShield is primarily used for installing software for Microsoft Windows desktop and server platforms, though it can also be used to manage software applications and packages on a variety of handheld and mobile devices.
InstallShield generates a .msi file which can be used on the destination computer in order to install the payloads from the source computer where it was created.It is possible to specify questions, set prerequisites and registry settings that the user will be able to choose at the installation time.
InstallShield was originally developed by The Stirling Group, a company founded in 1987 by Viresh Bhatia and Rick Harold, who had first met when they were computer science students at Northwestern University. Their first office was a small room in the basement of an old library building in Roselle, Illinois. They were to market a geographic mapping software, but it was never released.[1] By 1990, The Stirling Group was selling a package of six products called the Shield Series.[2] In that same year, the company also released the InstallShield product to developers.[3][4]
In 1993, The Stirling Group moved into larger offices in Schaumburg, Illinois and changed the companies name to Stirling Technologies, Inc. InstallShield became particularly well known after Microsoft endorsed it for use in Windows 95, and by 1997 Stirling Technologies estimated that it was being used in 85 to 90 percent of all software products written for Windows.[3][4] Since 1996, the company operated under the InstallShield name until Macrovision acquired the business in 2004 for $76 million in cash plus an additional $20 million based on meeting sales targets.[5]
Limited versions of InstallShield were at various times bundled with popular software development packages such as Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0, Borland Delphi 2006, and Borland C++Builder.[citation needed]
On 1 April 2008, the Macrovision Software Business Unit (including the InstallShield brand) was sold to private equity firm Thoma Cressey Bravo, forming a new company called Acresso Software.[6] In October 2009, Acresso Software changed its name to Flexera Software.[7]

There are three phases of the InstallShield Multiplatform installation process that can produce problems:
Possible problems and troubleshooting tips are provided in the following sections for each phase.
Because the InstallShield Multiplatform installation process is Java-based, a suitable JVM must be available to run the installation process. The simplest way to accomplish this is by using the provided launcher program install_amos_platform. This program automatically searches for a JVM to use. If it cannot find one, the program installs a JVM temporarily for use during the installation. Some of the common problems that might arise during this phase are:
There must be enough disk space available to accommodate the temporary JVM that is used to run the installation process. If there is not enough space, the following error message is displayed:
In this case, either free up enough space in your system's temp directory, usually /tmp or /var/tmp, or start the launcher using the command:
By default, the installation program runs in GUI mode. If the environment variable DISPLAY is not set, the following message is displayed:

Tivoli Access Manager for Operating Systems does not support InstallShield Multiplatform console mode so non-graphical installations must use the silent installation features.
The launcher uses hints to search for a valid JVM. For example, standard JVM locations are /opt/java1.3 and /usr/java. If a JVM is in a non-standard location, it can be used by running the following command:

If the log does not point out any obvious problems, the install process can be started by using Java directly, with the following command:

It is a simple process of entering data into input fields. If the process should crash, restart the process as follows, depending on the installation method used.

Using the is.debug flag causes InstallShield Multiplatform to display a detailed message about the install process. This might indicate a problem with the InstallShield Multiplatform product itself or with the JVM that is being used. If the JVM crashes, perhaps additional flags are need to run the JVM on a particular systems. For example, the JVM needs a large initial heap size. The flag '-Xmssize' can be passed to the JVM via the install_amos_platform.ja file, one flag per line, or directly using the Java command.
When all the panels have been correctly filled out and the decision to start the installation process has been accepted, the process will attempt to install and configure Tivoli Access Manager for Operating Systems and its prerequisite software. If an error occurs during this phase, check the following log files for more information:
